Portable Restroom Rental Security—3 Essential Tips

When you think of renting porta potties for your event, what are the first things that come to mind? You're probably thinking about location, capacity, and maybe even style. These considerations are crucial to give your guests an ideal hygienic experience, but security is another aspect of porta potty rentals that many overlook.

Unfortunately, the world is far from a perfectly safe place, and security is a necessary concern at any large event. Even if you're planning a relatively small get-together, you'll still want to put some thought into safeguarding your portable toilets and the guests that use them. These three tips will help get you started so that your porta potties don't become an unexpected source of trouble.

1. Consider Insurance

First and foremost, remember that most rental companies will charge you for damaged or missing rental units. While it's unlikely that a thief will make off with a whole porta potty in the middle of the night, vandalism and other problems aren't uncommon. These issues can be particularly important to consider if you're hosting a multiple-day event and intend for your units to remain on-site overnight.

Many rental companies offer insurance, often called a damage waiver, to help reduce or eliminate your exposure to potential liability. Just as with rental car insurance, this policy is worth considering to save you the potential hassle of dealing with issues later on. While you may not need it if you're only renting a few units, it's a worthwhile option for medium or large events.

2. Pay Attention to Sight Lines

Small events typically don't have many options for porta potty placement, and there's a good chance units at these events will be visible from almost anywhere. On the other hand, larger venues such as parks, outdoor arenas, and similar locations aren't so lucky. In these areas, landscaping features or structures may make it easy to place your portable restrooms out of sight.

While it may be tempting to use this to your advantage and hide your porta potties, leaving them in a highly visible area is far better. Keeping your porta potties visible will help guests feel safer and help discourage vandalism. If your event has on-site security, good sight lines mean security personnel can see the units even when they aren't patrolling nearby.

3. Don't Leave Units Fully Exposed

Place porta potties against another structure on at least one side when possible. This arrangement makes it harder for vandals to tip the units and makes them more secure against heavy winds and other severe weather. Placing multiple units side-by-side is another easy and free way to help keep them secure.

If some exposure is inevitable, use straps to secure it to the ground or other nearby objects. When in doubt, your rental company should be able to provide advice on how to secure your rental units against both intentional and unintentional tipping.
